Older homes were often constructed with 2 x 4 floor joists, supported by 4 x 4 wood post sat upon rocks or bricks.

In later years, small concrete pads were constructed, but the same smaller post and joists were used. Over time these tend to bow or bends in the middle, causing the sagging floors you may be experiencing.

Unfortunately, old wood does not bend back easily, so the only method of repair is to either replace the joists and reconstruct the post and pads.

In rare cases, the subfloor may need to be replaced to provide a level floor.
